Dennis Doyle(Pegg) isn’t the most adept of men. Years after leaving his fiancĂ©e at the alter, he has degraded into an overweight, poor, security guard. His friends and family try to cheer him up, while at the same time telling him he’s an idiot for ditching Libby(Newton) at the altar, while pregnant with their son. In spite of the constant prodding from his friends and his conscience, Dennis doesn’t have much reason to improve his health, life and love. That is, until Whit(Azeria) shows up.

For anyone, high school is a time of change and self-discovery. That goes doubly for Juno MacGuff(Page) who gets pregnant by her boyfriend Paulie Bleeker(Cera). Juno, by nature is an independent girl. She also has an unique perspective on the world and an interesting way of expressing herself (“God, Banana! Shut your freakin’ gob!”). So when she learns of her pregnancy, she rolls with the punches (figuratively) and decides to ‘go ahead an nip this thing in the bud.’ After a very brief stint in an all too awkward women’s clinic, Juno decides to keep the baby and give it up for adoption.

Barry B. Benson(Seinfeld) is a lowly worker bee. Only he isn’t so thrilled about working and making honey for the rest of his life. Whilst deciding what to do after graduating from college, Barry travels outside the hive into the human world. After two near-death experiences involving a tennis ball and size 10.5 winter boots, he meets Vanessa(Zellweger). To thank her for saving his life, he must break the cardinal rule of bees; never talk to humans.

Well blended humor(like, laughing in your seat funny) and romance is hard to come by. There are the classics, like Pretty Woman and You’ve Got Mail, but it is refreshing to see the ‘romantic comedy’ genre still has the goods. Dan In Real Life is about Dan Burns(Carell) and his awkward reentry into the dating scene 4 years after his wife died. Dan, the model father, is left to raise his three daughters; Lilly(Lawston), Cara(Robertson) and Jane(Pill) alone. While his daughters are off at school, Dan’s job is a non-fiction writer and help columnist on the verge of syndication. (more…)
